Located along the coast of the Maremma Natural Park, the Tower of Castel Marino is 102 meters high on the top of a hill from which there is a wide view towards the sea and the mouth of the Ombrone. Until the eighteenth century the sea must have lapped the base of the hill where the tower is located, while today, due to the retreat of the coastline, the tower is located about a kilometer from the seashore.

A WATCHING TOWER

The Tower of Castel Marino probably dates back to the 12th or 13th century, and is perhaps one of the first coastal towers built to defend the territory of the area. The tower is in fact mentioned in a deed of 1274 concerning the division of the Aldobrandesca County. The tower has a square plan typical of coastal towers which makes it difficult to date it based on the construction technique.

The Tower of Castel Marino is an exceptional panoramic point, from here the panorama extends towards the Granducale pine forest beyond which you can see the sea, immediately below the tower, the Canale dello Scoglietto flows, which skirts the Piana delle Falesie. Finally, the tower is also the ideal place to spot wild animals in the tranquility of their natural habitat.

The Tower of Castel Marino can be seen from the beach. So if you walk the itinerary along the beach from Marina di Alberese, you can observe it from a certain distance. Along the beach you can also see the towers of Collelungo and in the distance that of Cala di Forno. If, on the other hand, you want to see the tower up close, you can take the A2 Le Torri itinerary which leads through dense bush to the Tower of Castel Marino, from here you have a beautiful view of the sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
